No, Martin, the Hartley V8 is based on Suzuki Hayabusa cylinder blocks and heads (as is the Radical Macroblock).
But both engines have bespoke crankcases, crankshafts, drysumps etc.
It just says so in the video description, but it's a Hartley V8 in the Elise.
Although the Radical V8 Macroblock is widely used and very similar in every way to the Hartley Maxi V8 I personally prefer the Hartley because of engine design choices:
the Radical has the cylinder banks shifted away from each others, Hartley has a more elegant solution
the Radical V8 has a 72-degree bank angle for packaging reasons. Hartley has perfect 90°, will sound better and have better harmonics
The Hartley Maxi V8 has a little more displacement
Apparently it IS acually possible to edit the weight in LFS editor. Now if I can just find the info again …
EDIT: hard to find. Someone asked exactly that question and someone (Scawen??) responded that you can adjust the mass of the engine. It was something about an american V8 being way too heavy for its size.
EDIT: Here's a YouTube link of an older 2.6l version of the engine:
Since you only mention the bare necessities I'd like to add the GT5 Nordschleife to your wishlist. And a ModNation Racer-style track creator with foolproof IRL-GPS-Data-Import-Options. Also, all BMW E30 Models ever made with the possibility to swap a big range of engines into them. Umm … that would be all for the moment.
Easy task for Scawen. Get it ready for the weekend, please.
I can now tell you have a certain fascination for two-stroke engines. Sorry to tell you this, but the spherical engine is a four-stroke-engine. It is not single-speed, but I dunno about the rev-range. Not sure if it revs all that high. But concerning the KISS-principle:
70% less parts than a nowadays 4-stroke engine (can be built in 90 minutes)
30% lighter than a nowadays 4-stroke engine
25% more effective
has no crankshafts, connecting rods, cam shafts nor valve timing
Well, I just realize it can't have VTEC. Must sound like rubbish, then!
Backontopic: Ever since those mighty mad scientist overlords here moved their discussion to PM I wonder where to find this VTEC mod that increases torque …
Due to it's simplicity, VTEC is very reliable. And well, it wouldn't be economical to run the sharper cams all trough the rev range. The lower revs are for cruising.
And frankly: The increase in torque and power and the sound is what makes for the VTEC experience. If you want a light engine, VTEC is your choice.
